It seems to arrive earlier every year. It’s November, and the holiday season is solidly upon us. Our senses are bombarded by a cacophony of noise and a mishmash of events meant to instill a sense of anticipation and joy. Stores are adorned with a pageantry of items that entice us to buy, buy, buy. Conversations focus on food for a special meal, travel plans to visit family, and the excitement of a well-deserved respite from school or work. We are strongly ”nudged” to immerse ourselves in the holiday spirit. Whew! There’s a lot expected from each one of us!

It’s a happy time but also a tough time for many of us. Life just seems unbalanced – out of whack. Some look forward to togetherness while, at the same time, they sadly remember those who have passed. Some celebrations of the season are interrupted by concern about relatives who remain in a war-torn location or loved ones who have lost their belongings due to recent weather calamities. We live in an imperfect world. Everything seems topsy-turvy, jumbled up, and just plain stressful this holiday season. We ponder how we – and others – can feel less anxious and more centered. How do we “go on”?

“The holiday season is a perfect time to reflect on our blessings and seek out ways to make life better for those around us.” — Ravi Kumar

The first step is to take a deep breath and pause. Wait. Exhale. Take the time to pause and to let our world of worries stop spinning. Pause and then reflect on what we have versus what we need. Focus on gratitude for all things, great and small, that give us joy, comfort, and hope.

“Help the life of one person and you can help the community.” – Steven Sawalich

Next, take the time to offer compassion and encouragement to those who may need help getting through this season or even just one day. It could be someone in our extended family, the neighbor who lives across the street, or someone we haven’t heard from in a while. A phone call, email, or an in-person visit could make someone’s day. A smile and a kind word could give them hope.

“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” – Howard Zinn

Consider donating funds to or volunteering for a local organization that provides services to a cause you believe in. Explore your options and find a cause and a method that works best for you. And then jump in with both feet.

“Start where you are. Distant fields always look greener, but opportunity lies right where you are. Take advantage of every opportunity of service.” – Robert Collier

Remember that we are blessed every day in every way. Reflect on the good in ourselves and in the world. Believe in a better tomorrow. Find ways to share love, compassion, kindness, and hope. Start small. Practice gratitude. Give back. Change the world.
